The Sims Medieval: Pirates & Nobles

The Sims Medieval: Pirates & Nobles

2011

An expansion pack for The Sims Medieval, Pirates & Nobles puts the player's kingdom in the middle of a conflict between two opposing factions. The branching storyline allows the player to ally with one of the factions or remain neutral, culminating in one of three epic (and very different) final quests based on their choices.

Along with another designer, I developed the overall narrative, multiple characters, and branching quest structure that make up the backbone of the pack.

I designed, wrote, and scripted quests with variable outcomes and branching choices focused mostly on the Pirate faction. I also designed the Parrot and Falcon gameplay objects.

After finishing Sims Medieval, a small team started work on this "adventure pack" expansion. Our ambitions for quests were much larger and with some key improvements to our in-house scripting tool, we were able to create a reactive and more open-ended story that allows players greater agency than in the Sims Medieval base game. It's far from perfect, but I'm quite proud of this pack and it's one of my favorite projects I've worked on.
